Description |
A book published in conjunction with this exhibition of original Genizah fragments from the Cambridge University Library and the Jewish Theological Seminary Library in New York. The exhibition was divided into six “lenses”, each of which explored a different aspect of the Genizah story and the world revealed through the fragments: Solomon Schechter’s role in the discovery, multicultural life in Genizah times, daily life in Fustat, the Ben Ezra Synagogue, the shape of worship and education at the time, etc. The book’s five essays focus on the Genizah’s scholarship in the United States (Jacob Lassner), the nature of its material (Norman Golb), the Jews under Islam during its heyday (Lassner), Maimonides and the Cairo Genizah’s world (Joel L. Kraemer), and Hebrew literary culture in Spain of this period (Ross Brann). No catalog listing. |
