Description

The profound influence of Christian biblical imagery on the portrayal of biblical themes in Jewish art. Jewish exhibits included numerous printed books, many of them reflecting the works of Hans Holbein and Matthaeus Merian the Elder, and ceremional objects adorned with biblical images. Essay by William L. Gross on his collecting activities. Essay by Falk Wiesemann, “Bible Illustrations. The Transformation of a Christian Medium in Jewish Books from the 16th until the 19th Centuries”. In-depth, descriptive entries. 78 items.

This exhibition was an expanded version of #1708 (2002), and included numerous additional ceremonial objects from the Gross Family Collection.
