The images, taken while Yudovin served as An-sky’s expedition photographer, well-illustrate An-sky’s lifelong attraction to the theme of Jewish workers, their everyday life and culture. Essay by Valery Dymshits, focusing on An-sky’s views on the subject. Photographs with brief captions. 25 items.

This was the second in a series of exhibitions that endeavored to show, through archival photographs from the Museum of Petersburg Jewish Historical-Ethnographic Society (kept in the archives of the “Petersburg Judaica” Center), the world of the shtetl on the eve of its destruction. For the other three exhibitions, see: #1850, #1852, and #1913.
