Description

Fourteen richly-painted panels from the 18th C that were used by Rome’s Jews to adorn the processional road of the newly-elected Pope. These recently-discovered objects provide a window through which to view the situation of Roman Jewry in the 18th C (discussed in 2 essays on life in the ghetto by Silvia Haia Antonucci and Claudio Procaccia, and Giancarlo Spizzicino), its relationship with the Pope, and its and participation in the papal “procession ceremony” in particular (essay by Daniela Di Castro). Description

The exhibition was held on the occasion of Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to the synagogue and Jewish Museum of Rome.
