Description

An attempt to locate missing objects from the Berlin Jewish Museum’s initial collection. The museum opened a mere week before the National Socialists came to power in 1933. During the next five years, the museum managed to build an extraordinary collection founded upon the holdings of the Kunstsammlung der Jüdischen Gemeinde Berlin, and mount a series of exhibitions unique in Germany at that time (see #89 and #90). Some items from the Collection, which disappeared after late 1938, are now housed in the Israel Museum and the Skirball Cultural Center, but many important pieces are still missing. Introduction by Chana Schütz and Hermann Simon. 16 essays on the fate of, search for, and partial restitution of the Collection, and various other topics (modern Judaica, portraits, works by Lesser Ury and Marc Chagall, documentary photographs of the museum, central figures in the Museum’s history, etc.). No itemized listing.
