Description

An ethnographic study of Hassidic culture which endeavored, through numerous photographs and objects of material culture, to provide a window into the life, customs and dress of Hassidic Jews today. The community was presented as both a single movement, with a shared ideology, and as a diverse body of “courts”, each with its own characteristics, particularly in the area of dress. Brief introduction to Hassidism by Arthur Green. Essay on Hassidic customs and material culture by Ester Muchawsky-Schnapper. The remaining pages focus on Hassidic costume, with individual sections devoted to men’s clothing, women’s clothing, children’s clothing and Purim costumes. No itemized listing.
