Selection of amulets displayed in five categories, each associated with a new beginning: mezuzot and protective amulets for the home, wedding, fertility and protection of mother and child, circumcision and Pidyon ha-Ben, and Bar Mitzvah. Three catalog essays: “Why Collect Amulets” (William L. Gross), “Beli ayin ha-ra’a: Magic and Amulets to Ward off the Evil Eye in the Traditional Jewish Life Cycle; The Mezuzah and Safeguarding the Home” (Shalom Sabar), and “ ‘The Lord Bless Thee, and Keep Thee’—On Blessings, Wishes and Everything in Between” (Hagit Matras). The exhibition’s final section featured objects that were collected from the citizens of Ashdod that related to the exhibition’s main themes. Majority of exhibits came from the Gross Family Collection. 115 items.
