A book issued in conjunction with the exhibition “Jewish Dress Codes: Revealing the Jewish Wardrobe” on the fashion, history, and development of Jewish dress—particularly in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. Numerous essays on topics such as Jewish dress and the environment, Halachah and tradition, men’s head coverings, women’s hair coverings, belts and sashes (dividing the body’s upper and lower regions), women’s pants (for modesty), clothes for life cycle events, jewelry worn by brides and grooms, etc. Specific garments were juxtaposed with historical photographs from the Museum’s archives, showing how these articles of dress were originally worn. 66 items listed and discussed in detail. |
