Description

An exploration of World War I from the perspective of German-Jewish soldiers and their families, as evidenced by fieldpost letters, diaries, a plethora of historical photographs and personal objects. At the exhibition’s core was the dichotomy between Jewish patriotism and readiness to serve their country, and the increase of antisemitism in Germany during this period. Especially significant in this regard was the implementation of a discrimination census of Jews in the military units. Introduction by Ulrike Heikaus. 9 in-depth essays on German Jews and military life, the war journal of Paul Plaut, Jewish soldiers and religion, photographic documents of Eastern European Jewish life during World War I, commemorations of fallen Jewish solders, etc. Basic listing. 197 items.
