Description

An examination of the difficult relationship between Martin Luther (and by extension the Evangelical Church) and the Jews. Supported by the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-schlesische Oberlausitz and Touro College Berlin, the exhibition explored past and present cultural and religious perceptions of Judaism in occidental Christian societies, and provided an intimate look at Luther, not just as a scholar and clergyman, but also as a man in light of the socio-cultural environment in which he was embedded. Also addressed was the important role of art during this period, especially that of Luther’s contemporary, friend, and painter Lucas Cranach, who helped cement a biased image of Jews and Judaism in Renaissance art. Richly-illustrated catalog in 16 parts, including sections on The Bible—Two Readings (1), The Beginning—Judaism and the Ancient Church (2), Ecclesia and Synagoga (4), The Sow and the Church (7), and Jewish Emancipation and Ecclesiastical Antisemitism (12). Descriptive captions. No itemized listing.
