Description

A selection of Jewish New Year cards created and circulated in 20th-C Europe, America, and Israel. With imagery relating to different historical events, these cards tell the dramatic story of the Jewish people throughout the century. The exhibition also displayed illustrated New Year’s greetings from the late 19th C which preceded these cards, as well as Shana Tovah posters designed in recent years by Israeli graphic artist David Tartakover as a response to political events and social issues affecting the country. Central essay on the Shana Tova card as a reflection of Jewish and Israeli ideals in the modern era (Shalom Sabar); four additional essays by Rachel Sarfati on: an unusual Shana Tova sheet illustrated by Jacob Leib Levinsohn (United States, late 19th Century), war-time Shana Tova cards, the portrayal of children and youth on Shana Tova cards, and departures from traditional Shana Tova card imagery.
