The myth and popular culture that has been created around the figure of Bar Kokhba, his historical existence, and his image (particularly during the period of the Yishuv) as the archetype of Jewish heroism. Five essays address: the construction of the “myth” of Bar Kokhba (Sara Turel), archaeological aspects of the Bar Kokhba War (Amos Kloner, Boaz Zissu), coinage of the Bar Kokhba War (Cecilia Meir), Bar Kokhba in the culture of Lag BaOmer amongst Israeli-Jewish children (Haim Grossman), and the controversy over the Yiddish play “Bar Kokhba” (Ohel Theater, 1945). Exhibits include a 1920’s Bezalel Hanukkah lamp adorned with Bar Kokhba coins. No itemized listing.
