The network of relationships that existed between various religious and social groups in southern Germany, from the Middle Ages to the Reformation. Through the visual language of illuminated manuscripts, paintings and sculptures, the exhibition identified ‘spaces of opportunity’—beyond all cultural, social and political boundaries—in which discussions could take place between these groups, much as they do in modern-day chatrooms. This active exchange of ideas, between Jews, Christians and Muslims demonstrated that the multiculturalism of today also constituted the reality of Medieval German societies.
