Description

The first widescale retrospective of El Lissitzy in Russia, presenting the artist as a multi-faceted painter, book graphic artist, designer, architect, printer and photographer. The exhibition was jointly produced by the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center and State Tretyakov Gallery, and was divided between the two venues. Lissitzky’s early, pre-Avant Garde works (which included his “Jewish” pieces) were exhibited at the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center, with exhibits including book illustrations, posters, photocollages, manuscripts, and a number of his “prouns”. The Tretyakov Gallery portion focused on Lissitzky’s prouns and architectural projects, sketches of exhibition design, and photographs. Scholarly catalog with several essays, including one on Lissitzky’s “Jewish Period” (Alexander Kantsedikas, pp. 22–29, cat. nos. 394–404). All exhibits pictured, each with brief caption. 413 items.
