I. Name

Shaʿ has been construed as a theophoric element in the common West Semitic name Elisha. The identity of the deity is unclear. Albright related the name with the Aramean form of the moongod: SiʾSîn (Avigad 1964:190).

II. Identity

An identification of Sha with the moongod Siʾ or Sin is unlikely; because the rendering of Sin in West Semitic alphabetic scripts is always šʾ with an ʾāleph and never šʿ (Tigay 1986:81). A deity Shaʿ is not attested in cuneiform or West Semitic inscriptions. In th…
