Theosophist, poet, prose author, artist, journal editor, officer of the Irish Agricultural Organisation Society, and member of the Irish Convention of 1917. George William Russell is best known by his pen-name AE, which he adopted after a compositor was unable to read more than the first two letters of Æon, the Gnostic word for a higher being with which he signed a letter to the editor of the Theosophical journal Lucifer in 1888.
