Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ṭabarī, Aḥmad b. Muḥammad, Persian physician and scholar of the 4th/10th century, was born at Tarunja in Ṭabaristān (Yāqūt, 1/845), and so he was also given the nisba Tarunjī (al-Bīrūnī, Ṣaydana, 57, 91, 165; idem, al-Jamāhir, 144, 200).

Little is known about Abū al-Ḥasan's education except that Ibn Sayyār was his teacher. In his al-Muʿālajāt, Abū al-Ḥasan either refers to Ibn Sayyār as his tutor or by kunyas such as Abū Māhir, and Abū ʿImrān, and he explains the methods that he witnessed Ibn Sayyār using for curing…
