Abū al-Ḥasan Nādir al-Zamān was a famous Persian portrait painter at the court of the Mughal emperor Jahāngīr. At the end of the 10th/16th century he and his father, Āqā Riḍā Harātī, emigrated to India and joined the court of Jahāngīr at the time when Jahāngīr was still a prince. It would appear that Abū al-Ḥasan was born in 996/1588, since the following is written along the margin of his earliest painting: ‘Signed by Abū al-Ḥasan b.
