(1,500 words)

Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī, Aḥmad b. ʿAlī b. al-Muthannā al-Tamīmī (3 Shawwāl 210–307/17 January 826–919) was an eminent Ḥanafī traditionist from Mawṣil (Mosul). He is the author of the work known as Musnad. Abū Yaʿlā was born into a prominent family of scholars in Mawṣil. His grandfather, Abū ʿAlī al-Muthannā b. Yaḥyā, known as al-Bāzabdāʾī (apparently the name of a village on the west bank of the Tigris) was a distinguished Iraqi traditionist, and his father was to a certain extent a ḥadīth scholar (al-Azdī, 429; Yāqūt, 1/466; Ibn Ḥajar, 7/610).
