al-Ḥākim al-Shahīd

al-Ḥākim al-Shahīd, Abū al-Faḍl Muḥammad b. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad al-Marwazī al-Sulamī (d. 334/945), a Ḥanafī jurist and traditionist in Marw, who also held the post of wazīr for some time. Ḥanafī sources generally refer to him simply by the title ‘al-Ḥākim’ (al-Samarqandī, 1/212; al-Samʿānī, 3/477).

A remark made by ʿAbd al-Qādir al-Qurashī (d. 775/1374) who quotes information (3/313) from al-Samʿānī (3/477) which reads: ‘he narrated from Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal’ (rawiya ʿan Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal), has led some people to wrongly assume that one of al-Ḥākim’s teachers was Aḥmad b. Ḥan…
