al-Ḥurr al-ʿĀmilī, Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan al-Mashgharī (1033–1104/1624–1693), an Akhbārī jurist (see Akhbāriyya q.v.) and traditionist of the Ṣafawid period, and the author of the Imāmī ḥadīth encyclopaedia, Wasāʾil al-Shīʿa. The composite name, ‘al-Ḥurr al-ʿĀmilī’, contains a nisba that he shares with his family: it signifies their homeland of Jabal ʿĀmil in Lebanon; but also signifies, correctly or not, the family’s connection with al-Ḥurr b.
