Baṣra (Morocco), an ancient town in the far west of Morocco, of which only ruins remain. The name of the town was derived from Baṣra (q.v.) in Iraq. It was also known as Baṣrat al-kattān (‘cotton’), Baṣrat al-dhubbān (‘dairy’), and Baṣra al-ḥamrāʾ (‘red’), due to the prevalence of the cotton trade there, the abundance of its dairy products and the redness of its soil (Abū ʿUbayd, 2/789; Yāqūt, 1/653; Ibn ʿIdhārī, 1/103; Abū al-Fidāʾ, 133; al-Ḥimyarī, 108).
