Before the advent of Islam, Budayl b. Warqāʾ was a highly-respected person in Mecca but there is little information about his life (ʿAlī, 4/15). After the commencement of the Prophet’s mission, especially after the Ḥudaybiyya peace treaty, the name of Budayl frequently appears in the accounts related to the early history of Islam (al-Wāqidī, 1/581; Ibn Saʿd, 2/96; al-Ṭabarī, 2/625).
