A major migration of Turkoman tribes to Anatolia started with the defeat of the Byzantine army by the Saljūqs at the battle of Malāzgird (Manzikert) (see Āqsarāʾī, 16–17; Sümer, İslâm, 2, 5, 8 et passim; Bosworth, ‘The Political and Dynastic History’, 63–64). Considerable numbers of Turkoman tribesmen gradually settled in different regions of Anatolia from the shores of the Black Sea in the north to the Mediterranean Coast in the south and finally brought the greater part of the region under their sway (Köprülü, 85; Yücel, Yüzyıllar, 3…
