Ḥālī, Alṭāf Ḥusayn  (1253–1333/1837–1914), a poet who composed poems in both Urdu and Persian; he was also a biographer and literary critic who wrote in Urdu. He was born in Panipat in Hariyana province, India (Jān, 209; Barīlawī, 402). According to several sources, his family claimed it could trace its lineage back to Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī (q.v., d. 52/672), a Companion of the Prophet, and the renowned mystic Khwājah ʿAbd Allāh Anṣārī (d. 481/1088).
