Ḥudhayfa b. Qatāda Marʿashī

Ḥudhayfa b. Qatāda Marʿashī (laqab, Sadīd al-Dīn), a Sufi shaykh and one of the saints of the Chishtiyya (q.v.). He died in Shawwāl 207/February 822 and is buried in Baṣra.

There are few indications about his date of birth or other details of his life. According to Ṭabaqāt al-ṣūfiyya, he was one of the ‘ancient’ (qudamāʾ ) shaykhs of Syria (Anṣārī, 72). His nisba, Marʿashī, suggests origins in Marʿash, a town in the Taurus Mountains of southern Anatolia, homeland of the Marʿashī sayyids of Māzandarān.
