Ḥumayd b. Qaḥṭaba b. Shabīb al-Ṭāʾī

Ḥumayd b. Qaḥṭaba b. Shabīb al-Ṭāʾī (d. 159/776), was a senior 2nd/8th century military commander of the early ʿAbbāsid period. Ḥumayd, his father Ziyād, who was known as Qaḥṭaba (d. 132/749), and his brother al-Ḥasan (d. 181/797), were together famously part of the central cell of ʿAbbāsid daʿwa (q.v.) and agents in Khurāsān, who were clandestinely working to overthrow the Umayyad regime.

Sources give both Ḥumayd and his father the nisbas al-Ṭāʾī, indicating that they were members of the Ṭayy tribe, as well as al-Ṭūsī, indicating that they had settled in the Ṭūs …
