, Ottoman general and Grand Vizier under Sultan ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, was born at Gelendost, a village of the sand̲j̲aḳ of Isparta ( wilāyet of Konya) in 1236/1820-1; his father was a poor peasant named Aḥmed Ag̲h̲a. He came to Istanbul at the age of sixteen and entered the Mekteb-i Ḥarbiye (Military Academy), from where he was promoted to staff captain in 1264/1848.
