Ahmed III (Aḥmed III, 22 Ramazan (Ramaḍān) 1084–14 Safer (Ṣafar) 1149/31 December 1673–24 June 1736; Illustration 1), the twenty-third Ottoman sultan, was one of the sons of Sultan Mehmed IV (Sulṭān Meḥmed IV, r. 1058–99/1648–87) and Emetullah Gülnuş (Emet Allāh Gülnūş, d. 1127/1715). He ascended the throne on 10 Rebiülahır (Rabīʿ II) 1115/22 August 1703, in the wake of a Janissary uprising in Edirne and the subsequent abdication of his brother Mustafa II (Muṣṭafā II, r. 1106–15/1695–1703).
