Muḥyī l-Dīn Abū Zakariyyāʾ Yaḥyā b. Sharaf al-Nawawī (631–76/1233–77) was a ḥadīth scholar, ascetic, and leading author and jurist in the legal tradition of the Shāfiʿī school of Islamic law. He never accepted the honorific Muḥyī l-Dīn (the reviver of the faith), as he thought it only belonged to God (al-Muḥyī, the reviver).
