Abstract

Lexical field theory proposes a technique for representing lexical meaning as flat planes cast over experience. The theory offers attractive possibilities for plotting the meanings of words and groups of words schematically, but it involves the danger that interpreters will remain trapped in the semantic categories of their own mother tongue because of the intuitively-driven categorization that they have applied to the initial constitution of the field itself.
