Abstract

Ancient Greek has a systematic morphological distinction between so-called thematic and athematic verbs which is inherited from Proto-Indo-European. The thematic stem type represents a morphologically open class, the athematic type being obsolete. Ancient Greek also has an alpha-thematic stem type which is innovative and particular to this language.
