Tripoli, the Mediterranean port and de facto capital of the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, is located in northwestern Libya, around 100 km from the Tunisian border. With a population of 1.7 million, it is the country's most populous city. Vernacular Arabic is the spoken mother tongue of its inhabitants.
