The name wénhuàyǔyánxué 文化語言學 is interpreted in two different ways in Chinese Cultural Linguistics (CCL) itself: (1) as wénhuà-yǔyán-xué, i.e., interdisciplinary research on the relationship between language and culture; (2) as wénhuà-yǔyánxué, i.e., linguistics with a cultural approach, the approach by wénhuà-yǔyánxué taken to be constitutive of linguistics, since language is held to be very much determined by culture, and any language analysis not including culture, therefore, is seen as necessarily distorted (Xíng 1990, Preface:3, 1990:5).
