Administrative jurisdiction
(816 words)

The term “administrative jurisdiction” (Verwaltungsgerichtsbarkeit) does not appear in the sources until 1848. Although it is essentially only a Germanization of the Latinate expression Administrativjustiz (administrative judiciary), common in the pre-1848 period, administrative jurisdiction describes something fundamentally different: while the former term indicates the oversight of the actions of administrative authorities by other administrative authorities, true administrative jurisdiction exists only when this control is exercised by independent courts
