The term adventure novel was only coined in the 1870s, at around the same time in Romance medieval studies as the definition of 13th-15th century French “courtly romances,” and replacing the older term Abenteurerroman. A comparative study of the terminological history to examine subtleties and transformations in the terms used in the field of adventure literature remains to be made.
