1. Concept and genre

Conceptual history characterizes the concept of the diary as a European literary genre the span of which extends from the Greek ephemerídes to the Latin diarium, and from there to the vernacular terms that emerged in the 15th century (Italian diario and giornale; Spanish diario and jornal; English “diary” and “journal”; French journal).
