The term Empire, deliberately echoing the Empire Romain, denotes the brief lifespan of the French Empire under Napoleon I (1804-1815). In art, the term relates to an extremely historicist mode of the classicism that had dominated since the second half of the 18th century, emanating from Paris and manifesting itself primarily in interior decoration, furnishing (Domestic culture), and other artisanal objects.
