1. Concept
The Indo-European languages have a range of words for ‘father’, but they all share the “nucleus of power” [21. 259], including the metaphor of protection and nourishment (e.g. in English, lord = ‘loaf-guardian’, i.e. ‘keeper of the bread’). ‘Father’ was also used in titles of other persons of authority, such as Father for ‘abbot’, Latin pater as “spiritual father” (pastor, spiritual guide).
