1. Definition and beginnings

Today the term forestry means the science and theory of the ecological and biological regularities of forest ecosystems and sustainable multifunctional forest management. It first appeared in 1765 as a call for a scientific basis of silviculture in Carl Gottlieb Grote’s Entwurf der Forstwissenschaft (“Outline of Forestry”).
