1. Concept and definition

The range of meaning of the term “ornament” (from Latin ornamentum, “apparatus,” “distinction,” “decoration,” “embellishment”) was broader in early modern art and architecture than it is today. It also included avant-corps (risalto), pediments, stairs, plasterwork, wall decoration including ceiling paintings, and the entire interior, even including furniture [10]; [6]; [7].
