Architectural ornament includes all sculptural decorative forms placed on architecture. The definition given by Leon Battista Alberti (1404-1472) is indicative, drawing on Roman antiquity to define the column not merely as an element giving tectonic support but also as the highest-ranking ornament [1] (cf. fig. 1).
