1. Introduction

The Paulskirche Assembly was the “constituent German National Assembly” that met on May 18, 1848 in St. Paul’s Church (the Paulskirche) in Frankfurt am Main and sat until May 30, 1849. As the first pan-German parliament, it marked in particular the fulfillment of wishes dating back to the Napoleonic Wars (Napoleonic Wars; Wars of liberation [1813-1815]) for a popular assembly representing all Germans (Representation).
