Philhellenism

1. Concept

The term Philhellenism denotes an intellectual and political movement that reached its height in the 1820s. The movement expressed solidarity with the people of Greece, who in 1821 had begun an uprising against Ottoman rule, which was now seen as despotic and tyrannical (Ottoman Empire).
