1. Background

The three Partitions of Poland (more correctly, of the dual realm of Poland-Lithuania) in 1772, 1793, and 1795 – dates that also marked watersheds for the subsequent history of the Polish nation – can be understood only against the backdrop of shifting constellations of power in a period when Tsarist Russia was seeking to establish its place among the Great Powers and Revolutionary France was unnerving the traditional monarchies of Europe (see Europe 5.3.).
