The German word Publizität is a neologism borrowed as a French loanword in the 1780s. For a relatively short time it became a veritable buzzword. though it soon met competition from the term Öffentlichkeit (Public sphere), which largely replaced it. The Staatslexikon of Rotteck and Welcker merely has a cross reference from Publizität to Öffentlichkeit [1]. In 1794, Joachim Heinrich Campe claimed to have coined Öffentlichkeit as a translation of Publizität, but the terms were not totally synonymous [10. 38–42]; [2. 557].
