The French phrase renversement des alliances denotes the fundamental “transformation” of the system of alliances within the system of European states (States, system of) in the spring of 1756. The antagonism between the House of Habsburg and France, which had shaped international relations since the late 15th century, was ended and replaced with an alliance between the two powers concluded on May 1, 1756, which was to last until the outbreak of the revolutionary wars in 1792 (French Revolution [1789]).
