Slavery, and by implication slave markets, was widespread in early modern Europe, even persisting into the 19th century, especially in southern and southeastern Europe [2]. Many slave abductions to and from Europe proceeded via markets in Central Asia (Karakorum, Sarai, Novgorod), but the focus here will be on slave markets within Europe (on global interaction, see Slavery).
