1. Introduction

1.1. State formation

The term “Southern African world” is generally understood in a narrower and a broader sense. The stricter definition includes only the extent of what is now South Africa and the neighboring nations of Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, and Namibia. The broader sense also extends to Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Angola, and Zambia.
