1. Introduction

The terms ‘adverb’ and ‘adverbial’ are closely related and are often used interchangeably. Strictly speaking, however, ‘adverb’ is a structural term referring to a part of speech distinguished from other parts of speech by its form, whereas ‘adverbial’ is related to the syntactic function of a word or phrase.
